TCF Canada from Yaounde: a step-by-step guide
If your whole education happened in English and you now need a French test score for a Canada application, the process can look opaque from the outside. This guide walks through what actually happens between deciding to sit the TCF Canada and holding your result, from Yaounde.
TCF, TCF Canada, TCF Québec: not the same test
France Éducation International runs several versions of the TCF, with different sections and different uses. The general-purpose TCF ("tout public") serves academic or administrative needs. The TCF Canada is the version built specifically for a file submitted to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC): Express Entry, or Quebec's Arrima selection. That is the exact version to ask for at the test centre, not a generic TCF.
The TEF Canada, run by the CCI Paris Île-de-France, targets the same immigration goal through a different organisation. The detailed comparison guide covers the practical differences (in French).

An approved centre, not any location you like
The TCF is only administered at a centre approved by France Éducation International. In Yaounde, the Institut français du Cameroun is on the official list of TCF centres. That list changes over time: before committing, confirm availability and upcoming dates directly with the centre.
You have the right to register at the centre of your choice, without proving you have taken any other exam first. There is no administrative prerequisite to clear before requesting a seat.
From first contact to exam notice
Pick a test centre
You register with the centre of your choice, with no other exam required first: in Yaounde, the Institut français du Cameroun is on the official list of TCF centres.
Register within the window
Each session has its own registration window, set by the centre: miss it, and you wait for the next one.
Pay before the deadline
The exact fee and payment deadline come from the test centre itself, not from a single national portal.
Get your exam notice
It states the date, time and place for all four sections.
Bring valid photo ID
A physical, in-date photo ID: digital copies are not accepted on exam day.
You can retake the TCF Canada as many times as you want, as long as you leave a 20-day gap between two sittings of the same version.
Four sections, 2 hours 47
The two comprehension sections are scored up to 699 points each; the two production sections are scored out of 20. Speaking always stays a face-to-face exercise with an examiner, whatever format the rest of the exam takes.
| Section | Duration | Content | Scoring |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening comprehension | 35 minutes | 39 multiple-choice questions | Up to 699 points |
| Reading comprehension | 60 minutes | 39 multiple-choice questions | Up to 699 points |
| Written expression | 60 minutes | 3 written exercises | Scored out of 20 |
| Speaking | 12 minutes (2 of which is prep time) | 3 exercises, face to face with an examiner | Scored out of 20 |
Neither abstract grammar rules in isolation, nor rare specialist vocabulary: every question stays anchored in everyday, work or administrative situations.
Your ability to understand a document, an announcement or a conversation, and to produce a clear spoken or written message in a given situation.
Results, the certificate, and the NCLC scale
Results typically arrive within 15 days of France Éducation International receiving the session material (10 days if only the computer-based multiple-choice sections were taken). The certificate is digital, secured with a QR code, and valid for 2 years from its issue date: you download it from your TCF-Candidat account or collect it from the test centre.
For an immigration file, each score then converts to an NCLC (Canadian Language Benchmark) level. The full scoring grid, by immigration programme, is published on canada.ca: that is the reference to check for the minimum score your specific application needs.
A starting point, before spending on fees
The free French level test gives a CEFR benchmark in about thirty minutes. It does not replace the TCF Canada, but it avoids registering for the exam without knowing where you actually stand.
Take the free level test →Frequently asked questions
Do I need to already speak some French to register?
No. There is no prerequisite level to register for the TCF Canada: the test itself measures where you stand, from complete beginner upward.
How soon can I retake it if I need a better score?
France Éducation International requires a minimum 20-day gap between two sittings of the same TCF version.
How long until results arrive?
Typically within 15 days after France Éducation International receives the session material (10 days if only the computer-based multiple-choice sections were taken).
Is the TCF Canada enough on its own for an Express Entry application?
No: it is one piece of the file, not the whole file. The full scoring grid by immigration programme is published on canada.ca.
